The Hidden Costs of “Free” Education
We recently supported 20 needy pupils from Mumbetsa comprehensive School with uniforms and writing materials. The students are now comfortable in class like others.
The Bigger Picture: Poverty, Health & Family Struggles
Access to school is only part of the problem. Many of the children we work with face other challenges too:
- Poor health or lack of access to medical care
- Food insecurity leading to malnutrition
- Domestic issues and unstable home environments
- Long walking distances to schools, especially in remote areas
All these factors compound the already fragile path to education. That’s why our approach at Savanes CBO is holistic—we support not only school fees and learning materials, but also basic health needs and community support systems.
Real Stories, Real Struggles
We recently supported a young girl from a low-income family in Nairobi’s informal settlements. Her parents, both unemployed, couldn’t afford her uniform or school levies. She was out of school for months before we stepped in. Today, she’s back in class—happy, confident, and already dreaming of becoming a teacher.
Her story is one among many—and the reason we do what we do.
What Needs to Change
To truly make education accessible for all, we must:
