Good Health is Key to Keeping Children in School

It’s easy to see education and health as two separate issues. But for children in Kenya’s underserved communities, the link between the two is inseparable. At Savanes CBO, we’ve learned through experience that a child’s ability to attend and succeed in school often depends on their physical and mental health.

When a child is sick, hungry, or emotionally distressed, education takes a back seat. That’s why we approach education support with a strong focus on health and wellbeing.

The Overlooked Struggles Children Face

Many of the children we serve in arid regions and urban slums face daily health-related challenges that go unnoticed:

  • Recurring illnesses due to poor sanitation or lack of clean water
  • Malnutrition from food insecurity at home
  • Untreated infections that lead to absenteeism
  • Mental stress from unstable home environments or trauma

One missed school day turns into several. Soon, the child falls behind—and sometimes, drops out completely.

Our Health-Focused Approach

To keep children healthy and learning, Savanes CBO integrates basic healthcare services and awareness into our support programs:

  • Nutrition assistance through food packages for vulnerable families
  • Hygiene kits including soap, sanitary pads, and clean water education
  • Medical checkups and referrals through partnerships with local clinics
  • Mental health support through trusted community mentors and social workers

We also engage parents and guardians, encouraging them to prioritize health as part of their child’s education journey.

A Story of Change

A young boy we supported, Peter, was frequently missing school due to a recurring skin infection. His family couldn’t afford treatment, and school attendance became irregular. Our team stepped in—covered his clinic visits, offered hygiene supplies, and worked with his mother on follow-up care.

Now, Peter is back in class—healthy, happy, and catching up fast.

It’s proof that small health interventions can create major breakthroughs in education.

Building Healthy Learning Environments

Beyond individual support, we advocate for healthier school environments overall. That includes:

  • Promoting access to clean water and toilets
  • Training students on hygiene practices
  • Encouraging schools to be safe, inclusive spaces for both boys and girls

We believe a healthy child is a learning child, and a healthy school is the foundation for academic success.
